Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and
Head, Neck & Facial Pain Program

The success of our TMJ program is dependent upon a thorough assessment, a treatment approach specific to each individual and your commitment to follow a comprehensive, well-defined home program.

TMJ disorders are rarely simplistic in their origin and/or progression. Throughout your physical therapy treatment we will work to identify and address the controllable factors that will enhance your recovery.

Who can benefit?

The Advent Physical Therapy TMJ Program is a comprehensive program providing conservative therapy approaches for patients suffering from TMJ, head, neck and facial pain, including:

  • Those who lack mandibular mobility
  • Those who have excessive mandibular mobility
  • Those who have had TMJ surgery

      How do we begin?

We look at your history: past trauma to head, neck or shoulders, and the date when your TMJ symptoms first began. We look at the progression of your symptoms and a summary of management techniques and their effectiveness. We review the diagnostic and medical findings.

We identify abnormal oral behavior including grinding, clenching, excessive use of mouth and/or occupational/recreational factors. We look at your mandibular function: your rest position, your maximum opening and side-to-side motion, the pattern of opening, and presence of malocclusion.

We look at respiration. Do you have a history of chronic respiratory problems? What are your current breathing habits? We look at your resting position, and the mobility of the your tongue. We examine your posture, and look for abnormal muscular activity in face, neck, shoulders, skeletal angulation.

What about the nutritional component? We consider your caffeine intake, vitamin insufficiency and the types of foods you commonly eat. In addition, we consider the psychological component.
